There are two types of universal communication;
Numbers and Music. Music is much more carthartic than Numbers. Music is one of the few “proofs” of God’s existance. When explained by a “science” music has no value, but you no very well the value it has in your own life. When you can be taken to an entirely different state of mind by the right sequence of sound. Music is the Language of Divinity.

Not exactly true. The reason most music (excluding the intentionally atonal and arrhythmic crap) sounds good to us has a lot to do with numbers with regards to both rhythm and the reason certain combinations of frequencies sound pleasing to our ears. Music and math have more in common than you seem to think. There is an order and regularity to most music that can be partially explained by science.
But not entirely, of course.

I take your point, but this aspect is only a microscopic part of the reason why music affects people. In these modern times we have this convention of scientific reductionism, ie. that every phenomenon can be broken down and accounted for by the physical laws that we so far understand….. But, the feelings produced by listening to music are qualitative, and not quantitative, and so can’t be described in scientific terms. It’s like psychologists saying that consciousness is merely an illusion…. if that’s true, how come I’m actually aware of it? This probably all sounds a bit pretentious but it’s something that I find myself thinking about quite a lot, and I think as a society and a culture, we completely ignore a lot of the meaningful and profound aspects of life because they defy simple description by scientific methods……

please discuss

I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you…. for now!

Music is the language of the spirit. It is one of those things that we all understand and experience at a different level, quite apart from language, social and cultural influence. All of these “learned” things influence music and may be received by our conscious selves, but what lies under is firmly in the realm of the spirit.

Music transports me to a much lovlier place and transforms me into a much higher being. That is why I listen.

to silence the neurotic music inside my head

i was serious, you know… i have a constant flow of very strange music flowing through my head. but most of it is unintelligable (definitely not useable in my own music) and it gets very annoying. to me, external music’s most useful purpose is to get rid of this for a while, to drown it all out.

DanRoberts wrote :

_steve wrote :

…try to justify the logic

ok, my logic is as follows:

my (probably subconscious) mind is constantly composing music no matter what im doing. im sure everyone here has this to a point. however i have the mind of a composer thats done too much acid. this music is very irritating and weird, and does not help my composing at all, in fact inhibits it. if anyone heard it (if that was possible), they probably wouldnt even recognize it as music

the only way it becomes bearable is if i play something else which is organized in a way interesting to my mind. because my mind has something else other than itself to focus on musically, the music inside is silenced.

of course that isnt the only reason i listen to music.. i enjoy its structure and melodys, and the emotions it conveys. but i listen to music so much because it keeps my mind on track.

_steve wrote :

sorry.. im an bipolar ex-acidhead with pefs and no concentration. its hard to understand me sometimes. but im not lying to ya, grey.

WHY DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC?

i repeat my orignal answer with some modifications to make it clearer to you:

i listen to the organized harmonic patterns of air pressure known by humans as ‘music’. i listen not just because i appreciate its melody and structure and its emotional control over its listener, but because it silences the annoying unintelligable and uncontrollable ‘music’ which my subconscious mind produces every waking moment of my day. it is very possible that this mentally produced randomness is, in fact, not music, and is in fact a strange hallucination, but my mind interprets it as such. if i am subjected, externally, to ‘music’, especially that which i find pleasing, i am able to focus on it, and the ‘music’ inside my head goes away, allowing me to retain some amount of sanity.

if this doesnt answer your questions about my answer then your question cannot properly be answered by me, as i do not completely understand this disorder/ability/normality myself.

because it’s there
because i work in an office
because people are loud and frustrating, and the stuff coming out of my headphones is glorious

I see music in a strange sort of pattern….kind of like a wave form…when I hear a song, my mind automatically arranges the entire song in the pattern and I can hear it the entire song at anytime. Some music creates nice patterns, some not. Classical for instance….say the music from the original Star Wars movie…I can see in my mind the entire score….if I sit and listen to it, I know every part of the whole 2 album set.
I listen because I like the patterns…or arrangements of certain notes with other notes…the way they progress and build off each other. The instruments.

maybe similar to steve, although I don’t listen to drown out my own music…I use others music to enhance my own ideas (rarely works…LOL)
Steve, you should make one song with all this warped acid stuff you talk about and let everyone critique it, who knows you may start a new fad like Bill and Ted.
🙂

so why don’t you just get the sheet music and look at that without listening to anything? I’m sure it wouldn’t be the same, which begs the question: what else is there apart from what you mentioned that makes music pleasurable? I think that’s what we’re trying to get at here……..

re-creating the music in my head is way beyond my abilities. i wish i could, cause i have some really great ideas
Its beautiful (and rare) when somebody can start a nice long thread which isnt based on a flame, or which isnt immediately interpreted as a flame

I listen to music for the same reasons I look at paintings and sculptures, read poetry, see plays or movies, or go to strip clubs. All art conveys a thought or emotion that the artist expresses through that particular medium. The message that we take from the art may or may not be what the artist originally intended to communicate, yet we have constructed that message based on all of our life experiences & who we are. We all have an intrinsic need to communicate. Communication takes two forms – expression (output) & interpretation (input). Our minds NEED that input to constantly shape who we are.

Why do I listen to music? Because I have to!
